Best Halloween Costume Idea: Elliot and Gertie from E.T.

Not to brag or anything but my boyfriend and I are pretty awesome at Halloween! My most popular pin on Pinterest continues to be our costume idea of Mary Poppins and Bert that you can see here. This year, we wanted to do costumes that tackled two important issues: 1. Costumes that were creative and 2. Costumes that are not going to cost a fortune.

I am a big advocate of DIY styled costumes. There is so much joy to be had when you take pieces from your wardrobe and turn them into the costume from one of your favorite movies or stories. When we were deciding on Halloween costumes, our first place to look was none other than Pinterest. After hours of scrolling, we finally came across the costume we wanted to re-create: Elliot and Gertie from E.T.

Below is where we got our inspiration from. After that, it was time to get to work on our costumes.

My costume was super easy to put together. I started with a plain striped shirt. I recommend using a bodysuit for this costume. I didn’t have one and it was a pain trying to tuck in a regular shirt. I also did not have overalls but was able to find a pair under $50 that you can get here. I am usually a size 4 in dresses. I purchased the overalls in a size 3 and they were a bit sung. Go up a size for these overalls! Afterward, I got some string to tie around my hair as pigtails. I am wearing my pink TOMS as I usually don’t wear sneakers (but recognize that I need to get myself a pair). The pot and flowers (that I found on sale) I purchased at Michaels.

Patrick’s costume was also effortless to put together. He already owned a red hoodie sweater that he got from H&M (that you can also purchase here). Along with his favorite pair of jeans and his converse shoes, his costume was all set! Not only was this costume easy to put tighter but it also kept him warm while we joined his little sister for Trick-or-treating.

In our inspiration photo, the couple used an E.T. plush toy that you can purchase here. My boyfriend decided to take our costume up a notch and build an E.T. out of scratch. That’s right – he build E.T. The best part? E.T. was on a minute loop so he would say things like “E.T. phone home” or “Home?”.

Where to go apple and pumpkin picking in Northern New Jersey

I’m going to let you all in on a secret: I LOVE autumn! It’s the one time of year where I can wear layers and don’t get make fun it for it (I am not kidding, I am always cold lol). Having grown up in Northern New Jersey, I have a few places that I like to visit for apple and pumpkin picking.

Tranquility Farms: This is the perfect farm for a family outing! This is a farm that truly offers everything. You can take a hayride to the pumpkin patches or if you are not able to, pick one from their market stand. There is also a corn maze, a massive jump pillow and cow train for kids to enjoy.

Melrick’s Town Farm: A hidden gem in northern New Jersey that offers several orchards of apples for you to pick. On your way to the orchards, you can enjoy a hayride by beautiful horses and charming wooden baskets to put in your sweet fruit. Their farm stand offers you a chance to purchase local wine, cheese and honey. This is a great farm to go to if you want to avoid large crowds, even on the weekend!

Alstede Farms: Another great farm in northern New Jersey that offers everything. There are dozens of apple orchards to pick from. Additionally, you can also pick pumpkins from their pumpkin field and take a stroll through their sunflower maze. I recommend getting to the farm early. This is a farm well-known in the area and it can get busy! I have also been told that they now charge $20 for parking so make sure you have cash on you.

What is your favorite thing about autumn? Feel free to let me know in the comments below!

How to Wear White after Labor Day

To wear white or not to wear white, that is the question! There is a lot of speculation around this topic. If you look at some of my favorite looks from the year, you will see a lot of white in my wardrobe. Items a white lace dress that I talked about earlier in the year here or white t-shirts like this one can easily be incorporated into your fall wardrobe.

I was easily able to add white to my look in this post with a favorite pair of white jeans. Next, add some dimension to your look with a charming printed top (my go to print is always floral). Since the weather is still nice, I decided to add a pair of blush open toe heels plus a pink belt to accent my top. Fall fashion is not complete without a floppy hat. Plus, they are perfect when you are having a bad hair day!

See? Wearing white is easy during the fall. So should you wear white or not? Well, I think it all comes down to how you feel. If wearing white accents makes you feel confident and sexy, I say do it!

5 Ways to Stay Cool (and chic) in Hot weather

Summer heat is here! For many, that makes it hard to stay comfortable in the clothes that they are wearing. Fear not – I am here to help! I have a few items that will help you stay cool in the summer heat while not compromising your chic style.

Straw Hats

Not only are these bad boys super chic but they also help keep you cool when the days start to get really hot. They pair well with almost any look. Plus if you are having a bad hair day, no one will ever know!

Chambray shorts

The best investment I made this year was getting a pair of chambray shorts. This fabric of chambray shorts are so breathable. I can’t help but live in them this summer because of how comfortable I am in them (plus they are super cute).

Wide Leg Pants

All my working ladies up your hands up! 🙌🏼 There are some days that you are simply not going to want to wear a dress to work. And that is ok. Consider adding a pair of wide leg pants to your wardrobe instead. They won’t cling to your skin adding extra heat to your body. Chic and oh so comfortable!

Slide Sandals

Another great piece to add to your shoe closet without breaking the bank. I have been living in these LC Lauren Conrad slides because of cute they are and the comfort they have brought me. You don’t have to worry about your feet getting sweaty now! From the beach to your back yard, you will be sure to be living in these sandals for the rest of the summer.

Light lingerie

There is nothing worse than the feeling of an uncomfortable bra – especially in the summer.  When I am not at work, I am living in comfortable bralettes to keep me cool. For work, I am wearing my 24/7™ Seamless Stripe Plunge bra from ThirdLove. I had a honor to work with them on a collaboration and let me tell you – they are the real deal. This bra is so light (even though it has an underwire, it doesn’t dig into my skin) and give me the coverage I need to go on with my day!

Ta-da! See? Simple items you can add to your wardrobe without breaking the bank. Now go out and make the most of this beautiful summer!

How to style your maxi dress for the fall

Summer always goes by far too fast! I cannot believe that some stores are already bringing out out their Halloween (and Christmas merchandise) out already. BANANAS right? 😳 Today, I want to dedicate a post to help you hold on to summer as long as you can. Styling your favorite summer maxi dresses (like this one) for the fall is super easy to do. Here is how to do it:

Layers, layers, layers

When in doubt, add some layers. Maxi dresses look great with a long blazer or denim jacket. I tried to wear a heavier fall coat to show you how to style it with this dress but I’m sorry you guys. It is WAY to hot out for that! 😅

Bootie time!

When the weather starts to get cooler, it’s time for your favorite booties to come out to play! You can wear them with stockings to give you some extra warmth while giving you a polished look. I HIGHLY recommend getting yourself a pair of waterproof boots for fall (I just ordered these for myself). They are especially useful when you are doing fall festivities such as pumpkin picking and hayrides. 🍂

Step up your accessory game!

The great thing about jewelry is that is universal. You can always pay up your look for any season with the right jewelry. I love this long pearl necklace. It’s so simple but pairs perfectly with my dress and jacket. Speaking of accessories, be sure to bring out your hats and scarfs (I love this floral print scarf from J.Crew). They are perfect to throw on with a dress.

See? Effortless. I hope this post inspires you hold on to your summer maxi dresses a little bit long as we (eventually) make our way to fall.
